When faced with the stark reality that their resistance has failed, a couple must come face to face with the fact that they can either die together or run away and be apart. Part 3 of an Educational Webinar Series hosted by the Sarah Lawrence College Graduate Program in Human Genetics with the theme "Beyond the Diagnosis: The Therapeutic Odyssey". This session will focus on the future of therapeutics for rare genetic diseases. This will include discussions about new advancements in technology, new workforce challenges that could arise, and changes to policies to increase access to diagnoses and treatments. REGISTER HERE. 

Marie-Helene Bertino is the author of the novels Parakeet (NYTimes Editor's Choice) and 2 a.m. at The Cat's Pajamas, and the short story collection Safe as Houses. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Tin House, Electric Literature, Granta, Guernica, BOMB, among others. Awards include The O. Henry Prize, The Pushcart Prize, The Iowa Short Fiction Award, The Mississippi Review Prize, The Center for Fiction NYC Emerging Writers Fellowship and The Frank O'Connor International Short Story Fellowship in Cork, Ireland. She has taught for NYU, The New School, and Institute for American Indian Arts. She currently teaches in the Creative Writing faculty of Yale University. Curtis Chin reads from Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant, published by Little, Brown in Fall 2023, followed by an audience Q&A and book sales/signing. Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant is a memoir about coming of age and coming out, which traces the author's journey through 1980's Detroit as he navigated rising xenophobia, the AIDS epidemic, and the Reagan Revolution to find his voice as a writer and activist — all set against the backdrop of his family's popular Chinese restaurant.

A co-founder of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop in New York City, Curtis Chin served as the non-profits’ first Executive Director. He went on to write for network and cable television before transitioning to social justice documentaries. Chin has screened his films at over 600 venues in sixteen countries. He has written for CNN, Bon Appetit, the Detroit Free Press, and the Emancipator/Boston Globe. A graduate of the University of Michigan, Chin has received awards from ABC/Disney Television, New York Foundation for the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, and more. His memoir, Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant was published by Little, Brown in Fall 2023. His essay in Bon Appetit was just selected for Best Food Writing in America 2023 and he just produced an episode of America's Test Kitchen's podcast, Proof.

Jim's special interests are in robotics, evolutionary computation, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science. He is the author of research papers on developmental robotics, neural networks, and computational models of analogy; author of the Metacat computer model of analogy.
